Are Floss Picks As Good As Regular Dental Floss?

are floss picks as good as regular floss? Steele Creek

Are floss picks as good as regular floss? While it’s better to use a floss pick than not floss at all, it’s important to note that floss picks can only clean a part of the tooth’s surface. At The Steele Creek Dentist in Charlotte, we recommend traditional floss or tape. Here’s why:

A floss pick holds just a small piece of floss stretched in a straight line. But teeth are rounded, with occasional irregularities. A straight segment of floss just won’t conform to the contours of the tooth as well as traditional, string floss.

By wrapping string floss completely around a tooth, you can clean plaque off your teeth far more effectively. We have seen patients who are dutiful floss pick users who developed decay due to a small crack the floss pick missed day after day.

Flossing, The Right Way

Here is a guide to proper flossing:

  • Cut a segment of floss about 18 inches long and securely wind each end around your middle fingers.
  • Take hold of the floss with your forefinger and thumb leaving about two inches to work with. Thread the floss between two teeth.
  • Hold the floss tightly against the side of the tooth and move it up and away from the gumline. You want to clean the space between the tooth and gum without pulling more gum tissue away, so it’s critical to scrape up and out of the pocket.
  • Move the floss around the tooth to clean every surface—especially those that your brush can’t reach. You can use a “shoeshine” method if you like. With 18 inches, you should have enough to furnish a clean segment for each tooth.
  • Some people find it simpler to start on one end of the upper teeth and clean each gap one by one until they reach the end on the opposite side, and then repeat for the lower arch.

If you don’t usually floss, your gums might bleed the first few times. The bleeding may be due to gum inflammation, the beginnings of gum disease. Keep flossing gently and the bleeding typically stops within a week or two.

Sparkling Smiles With Safe Bleaching

affordable teeth bleaching Charlotte

Sparkling smiles are more attractive than dull and yellow ones: you won’t get much disagreement there. Everybody likes to see a pleasing smile, and having beautiful teeth is also good for your self esteem. At The Steele Creek Dentist in Charlotte, we create sparkling smiles every day with cosmetic dentistry.

Unfortunately our teeth lose their luster as we grow older, but we see staining on young patients, too. To protect teeth from staining, it is vital to brush after meals to remove substances that can stain. After consuming acidic foods or drinks, however, it is better to rinse your mouth with water to dilute the acid. This will protect your enamel.

A great smile is a huge asset. It’s how we express a range of emotions without saying a word. Our goal is to draw your teeth and facial structure into harmony, so that you are able to present the world with the best possible you.

At The Steele Creek Dentist in Charlotte, teeth whitening is safe and effective, and just one of the cosmetic dentistry procedures we offer. We have extended evening and Saturday hours for your busy schedule. Call for an appointment with us today!

5 Tools For Tooth Transformations

porcelain veneers price Charlotte

Too-small teeth. Misshapen teeth. Cracked teeth. Chipped teeth. Spacing irregularities. These problems are all-too-common. But you don’t have to live with them! With the advances in cosmetic dentistry, The Steele Creek Dentist in Charlotte can fix these vexing tooth problems!

  1. Veneers. Porcelain veneers are extremely thin shells, custom-made to match the size, shape, and color of your teeth. They are cemented to the front of the teeth to dramatically improve your smile.
  2. Bonding. This procedure uses a strong tooth-colored resin to close spaces, repair chips and cracks, or change the shape. The resin is molded into place and then a light is applied to harden the material for secure adherence to the tooth.
  3. Recontouring. Minimally-invasive reshaping of a tooth by removing little bits of enamel to improve the shape or length. This cosmetic dentistry procedure is sometimes called odontoplasty or slenderizing.
  4. Crowns. Most people are familiar with this durable multi-purpose restoration. Natural-looking dental crowns are fabricated in the shape and color of the tooth and cemented into place to fully cover the part of the tooth visible above the gumline.
  5. Braces. Patients of all ages are transforming their smiles with unprecedented orthodontia. Before you dismiss this option as too time-consuming or costly, learn about the new braces now available. Braces are more convenient and discrete than ever before.

At The Steele Creek Dentist in Charlotte we improve smiles with cosmetic dentistry every day. We have extended evening and Saturday hours to fit your busy schedule. Call for an appointment today!
